The first question is who is moving where? Are you used to living in a neighborhood and are now moving across town, across the state, across the country? Are you moving into someone's existing space? Remember, it is important that neither partner feel like a permanent guest. Make sure that both of you are reflected in your home. This may mean adding new decorative elements, rearranging the furniture, reorganizing the kitchen cupboards or changing the message on the answering machine and the name on the mailbox. Both partners need to be sensitive that these changes are not always easy. A woman about to move into her fiancé's apartment commented, "I know that no matter how much he loves me and looks forward to us being together, it will be strange for him to see two big guys carrying my armoire through that door." Giving up coveted shelf space can be irritating, but the message is, "I'm happy you're with me."
